Syd Carpenter

Syd Carpenter is an African American sculptor and chair of the art department at Swarthmore College, and also has a studio and gallery in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. She earned her BFA and MFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture in 1974 and 1976, respectively.[1]

A major theme in Carpenter’s artwork is African American farming and gardening as represented through her use of such items as beans, seeds, baskets, and canning jars. The sculptures included in her series Places of Our Own were developed through a succession of visits she made to farms in Georgia and on South Carolina’s Gullah Islands. Carpenter’s interest in agriculture stems from her grandmother’s vegetable garden in Pittsburgh.[2]
