Frequently Asked Questions

The activation link I received doesn't work.

The activation link will expire if it isn't used within a set period. Contact LibraryTechServices@philamuseum.org to request a new activation link.

I'm having trouble activating my account.

OpenAthens requires a strong password. The password you select must have:

  • 8–20 characters
  • A mix of upper/lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters

Contact LibraryTechServices@philamuseum.org for assistance.

I activated my account, but can't log in.

Once you have activated your account, go ahead and try logging in to the MyAthens portal directly (do not reuse the activation link).

I have an OpenAthens account. Do I need to create a separate user account for a particular database?

Some resources may require additional steps for full or added functionality, such as registering an individual user account, or receiving requested content via an email address. These include:

  • Artstor — While technically compatible with OpenAthens, remote access to Artstor requires that users link to a personal account which is managed separately (and effectively supersedes it). Individuals can create personal accounts on-site which are active for 120 days (this period is reset each time the user logs in on site). If you are a PMA user and need to register an account or have an account that has expired, please contact LibraryTechServices@philamuseum.org.
  • Ancestry Library Edition — On the result page for a digitized document, you may need to submit an email address to view more than a preview. Follow the "Send Your Find Home" prompt to the right of the record to receive a link to your personalized Discovery Page.
